Reflexology is the gentle massage and stimulation of reflex areas on the feet (and hands). The process may help to promote physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing. The foot has over 7000 nerve endings, 26 bones, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles. Divisions of the feet into “zones” and reflex areas have been found to reflect certain glands, organs, systems and parts of the body.

What is Reflexology

In 1913 Dr William Fitzgerald noticed an anaesthetising effect on specific parts of the body when pressure was applied to related reflex points on the feet.  During his research he divided the body into ten equal and vertical zones, ending in the fingers and toes. He concluded that pressure on one part of a zone could affect everything else within that same zone.

Further development and refinement of this idea was carried out in 1930s by Eunice Ingham and the therapy of modern day reflexology was born. She noted that congestion or tension in any part of the foot mirrors congestion or tension in a corresponding part of the body. For example treating the big toe related to the head and treating the whole foot had a relaxing effect on the whole body.
